Improved structure

Before INSIKT Scorecard, BDX did not have a uniform goal management process. This made it difficult to follow the goals on an ongoing basis and created uncertainty in monitoring results and knowing that everyone was focusing on the same goal.
 

- For me, who works across the group, it was difficult to form an idea of how the group was doing and what was happening in the business regarding goal work. I had to assume and search for information about how the work was going, which was very time consuming.

The lack of uniform goal work and the challenge of compiling the work also made it difficult to standardize and focus operations on common goals.

- It was difficult. We also did not have a clear common thread, it was very scattered .Even though everyone was trying to work towards the same goals, it was difficult to ensure that we were working as effectively as possible.
 

Karoline goes on to explain how different department heads had different approaches to the task. Different tools were mixed together and it became more and more scattered the deeper you got. This made follow-up even more difficult.

- It was very scattered and difficult to get a proper overview. In some cases, it was even so person-dependent that you had to call up a person and ask how things were going to form an opinion.

As a result, follow-up was not always done at the desired level. Instead, monitoring often stopped at targets reported in the annual and sustainability reports and the more 'soft values' were monitored once a year.

The red thread

BDX is a role model when it comes to goal management work and something they do particularly well is to establish a clear red thread through their goals. There is a clear line of thought about how different goals, measures and activities affect each other to ensure maximum effect. There is also a solid focus on involving the entire organization and increasing engagement through all levels. In addition to a clearly set vision and business idea, there is a well-developed business plan in place. The business plan consists of a current situation analysis, a marketing plan, a budget and overall goals where everything is connected.

- The marketing plan is then the red thread from the strategic plan and the overall goals. The overall goals are broken down into operational goals and then activities are linked and everything is followed up in the form of metrics. In the past, the budget had a life of its own. Sure, it was connected, but it wasn't talked about in the way that the budget is part of our business plan.

Being able to gather everything in one place, in a tool that the organization was already comfortable with, was a real boost for BDX. A common thread throughout the goal management work, which is also easy to adopt by the business and align the work for maximum effect.

The gold medals on the wall

Another effect of INSIKT Scorecard on BDX is that there is more talk about targets in most forums.

-Previously, we focused on financial dialogues, but today we have taken the next step and are working with goal dialogues where the focus is not only on finances. Working with goals creates greater commitment among all employees, but it is also important that it is worked on continuously. Goal work must not become a paper product, something nice on the bookshelf that is taken out when management asks for it. We note that goal dialogs in each division and business area have the desired effect even at group-wide level. It creates an interest in knowing goal fulfillment and working proactively.
Karoline also mentions the importance of making work fun. They have selected three goals that they think should have an extra focus this year.

- When we starred the three goals, our CEO gave us three chocolate gold medals that we will write the goals on and hang up in a place where you can see them and be reminded of them. I thought that was innovative!
